Nethus, the Goddess of Death and Renewal

Nethus is the goddess of death and renewal, revered and sometimes feared by many cultures. Her emblem is an hourglass within a stylized representation of a budding flower, symbolizing the passage of time and the inevitability of death. Nethus is a neutral deity, neither good nor evil, as she sees death as a natural part of life. Her followers are those who understand this philosophy, and they work to celebrate the lives of the dead and ensure their peaceful transition to the afterlife. Nethus' followers are known for transforming graveyards into beautiful groves, filled with life and beauty. They believe that death should not be feared, but rather celebrated as a step in the cycle of life. Despite their peaceful intentions, however, some people mistakenly fear or revile Nethus due to her connection to death. Her shrines are often located in graveyards, where her followers tend to the dead and offer solace to the bereaved. Those chosen by Nethus to be her holy champions are called upon to spread her teachings and protect the sanctity of the dead.

Divine Domains

Nethus' Divine Realm is a place of balance between life and death, renewal and decay. Here, the goddess presides over the final journey of souls, guiding them from the mortal world to their ultimate rest. The realm is split into two distinct areas, each reflecting the dual nature of Nethus' portfolio.

The first area is a lush and verdant forest, filled with life and growth. Trees tower high into the sky, their branches reaching towards the light. Soft, fragrant flowers carpet the ground, and gentle streams wind their way through the landscape. In this part of the realm, the living and the dead can commune together in peace. Here, Nethus' followers can come to find solace and renewal, to bask in the life-giving energy that the goddess embodies.

The second area is a more somber place, a forest on the brink of death. The trees here are withered and twisted, their branches hanging low and bereft of leaves. The ground is barren, and a misty fog shrouds the landscape. This is where Nethus tends to the dead, guiding their spirits on the final leg of their journey. In this part of the realm, the goddess is said to offer condolences and comfort to the bereaved, easing their transition into the afterlife.

It is here, in Nethus' realm, where divine servants and celestial creatures will often spend time with those who have led evil or wicked lives. In the hopes that they will repent and understand the impact of their actions, they are given the chance to reflect on their past before they are judged and sent to their final resting place. However, those who have disturbed the dead through Necromancy or who have become liches themselves are strictly forbidden from entering Nethus' realm. They are denied the comfort and guidance that the goddess provides, and instead face judgment and punishment in the lower planes.

Despite its somber nature, Nethus' realm is a place of hope and renewal. It is a testament to the goddess' power over life and death, and a symbol of her unwavering commitment to her followers. Her Divine Realm has had many names. The Timeless Grove, the Garden of Reflection, The Threshold. Many of her belivers simply call it The Peace Between.

Artifacts

The weapon, known as the "Reaper's Touch," is a beautifully crafted scythe that serves as a symbol of Nethus' power and grace. It is made of a mysterious metal that appears black in dim light, but shines with a soft, silver glow when it is exposed to sunlight. The handle of the scythe is carved from a dark, rich wood and is adorned with intricate silver filigree that seems to depict images of life, death, and rebirth.

The blade of the Reaper's Touch is what truly sets it apart from other weapons. It shimmers and dances in the light, creating a mesmerizing illusion that almost makes it seem like the weapon is alive. When the scythe is wielded, it seems to respond to the will of its user, cutting through even the sharpest armor.

The scythe itself is massive, towering over even the tallest of humanoids, but feels surprisingly light and easy to wield. It gives off a sense of both power and comfort, as if it is meant to be held by those who understand and accept the cyclical nature of life and death.

In the right hands, this scythe is a force to be reckoned with, capable of reaping the lives of enemies with ease. But its true power lies in its connection to the god of death and renewal, Nethus. Those who have earned the deity's favor may be able to call forth greater abilities from the weapon, wielding its power to bring balance to the world and to aid in the transition of souls to the afterlife or back to the world of the living.
